Bonjour from Avignon.
After a quiet train trip from St Pancras to Avignon, we had the fun of queueing to get our rental car – a Renault Scenic (manual), with only ~ 800km on the dial.
The first 10-15 minutes was fun getting used to being on the right side of the right, and gear shifting with my right hand. While I can’t read the road signs – the GPS is at least is in english.
We are staying about 20 minutes out of Avignon on a small farm in a wood chalet near a paddock with two goats and a pony.
Nerida and I head off to buy some supplies and got lost following the directions we were given to find a small market, but did find a nice little village where ther was a wedding taking place with a tractor decoratored with white ribbons. We found a nice boulangerie though. Being sensible we then used the GPS to find a proper supermarket and got our supplies.
Still knackered with jet lag we turned in early and all had a good night sleep.
We then spent Sunday morning in Avignon. We started with the Place Du Palais which was the home of the popes during the 14th century when they abondoned Rome. We then walked down to the Pont Saitn-Benezet bridge – or what is left of in on the Rhone.
Returning to the center of town we stopped for lunch and all had crepes – large and very filling.
We then walked up to the Jardins Des Doms overlooking the town and river. Was wonderfully warm in the sun – around 30C, if a little breezy at times.
We returned home and after playing some cards attempted to go back to our supermarket for some food for dinner, to find it had shut at noon on a Sunday. We ended having to head back into Avignon to get some supplies.
Another dinner of bread, cheese and ham – finished off with the last of the churros with nutella we got in Avignon, yummy.
Plan for tomorrow is Orange in the morning and we will see how we go after that.
